Meet our Staff
The Texas State BSM staff are here to join in what God is doing on the campus by helping train and raise up student leaders.
Wayne
Director
Wayne has been a BSM director in Texas since 1994 and director at Texas State since 2011. He is the father of two amazing daughters and the husband of one incredible wife. His passion is to see the change that God brings in the lives of college students who go “all in” to follow Christ and to see how God influences the world through them. Wayne enjoys reading, playing disc golf, and generally enjoys throwing and catching things. He received his doctorate in 2015 from Hardin-Simmons University, his Masters degree in 1994 from Southwestern Seminary, and his BA in 1989 from Stephen F. Austin. God used the BSM at SFA to alter the course of his life.
Katie
Associate Director
Katie is originally from Oxford, Mississippi. She attended the University of Mississippi where she was actively involved in the Baptist Student Ministry on her campus. Through this, God grew her love for ministry. Following college, she attended seminary at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. She also spent a year overseas doing missions. In between, she returned to Ole Miss BSU as an intern and the Lord used this to call her specifically to college ministry. Now, she loves meeting and serving students at Texas State. Her desire is to help them grow in their walks with Christ and follow Him wherever He leads.
Mark
Ministry Coordinator
Mark is the Associate Director at Texas State BSM. He has been on staff since the summer of 2020 and loves it here. He is the worship team director; he plays guitar and cajon and is learning bass guitar and piano. He is currently pursuing his master's degree at Midwestern Theological Seminary in Pastoring and Preaching. He is very excited to get to know you and welcome you to the BSM family!
Karlee
Campus Missionary Intern
Karlee is originally from Earth, Texas. She attended Texas Tech University and got her bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. She was heavily involved in the Texas Tech Baptist Student Ministry, helping with international student ministry, leading worship and discipling freshman girls. It was during this time that the Lord developed her love for college students. She has been on staff at Texas State BSM for a year.
Kelly
Office Manager
Hello, I'm Kelly Opiela, I received my degree in photography in 1999. This fall I will be celebrating my 22th wedding anniversary to Scott. He is a 2003 graduate from Texas State University. I have two teenagers Cameron (16) and Kendall (14). I live in Wimberley but grew up in Manchaca (South of Austin). I enjoy crafting, hiking, camping, gardening and being with my family. Before BSM I was a Children's Ministry Director in Kyle. I'm blessed to be on my new journey with BSM. I look forward to meeting you and watching your journey with BSM.
